About the

Episcopal Church

Many people know us as the church with female priests and a gay bishop, and we are all this and more – over two million people from every background and point of view, gathering to pray, learn, support one another, and bring about a more just and peaceful world.  We bring together ancient spiritual traditions with a concern for the most urgent issues of society.

As Episcopalians, we are followers of Jesus Christ, our Lord, and believe in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We strive to love our neighbors as ourselves and respect the dignity of every person.

The Episcopal Church has members in the United States, as well as in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Europe, Haiti, Honduras, Micronesia, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Venezuela, and the Virgin Islands.

The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, and traces its heritage to the beginnings of Christianity. Our liturgy retains ancient structure and traditions and is celebrated in many languages and musical styles.  Episcopal means “having bishops,” and our bishops share in leadership of the church with priests and lay men and women.
